Finishes Used
- Renaissance Wax
This wax is special blend of micro-crystalline waxes that will not stain or discolor with aging. It is acid neutral, water and alcohol resistant. Sometimes, I will hand rub the finish with this wax to bring out the luster. I will use either a cloth or 600 grit abrasive paper and sometimes both in order to get the desired results.
- Mineral Oil
This oil is often used to finish butcher block because it is food safe and does not mildew or turn rancid like a vegetable oil would. I will rub several coats into the wood and let it soak in between coats. This finish does not dry; it is absorbed into the wood, and can leave marks on other absorbent surfaces. It is easy for anyone to restore the finish as needed.
- Danish Oil
This oil is a pure, highly refined Polymerized Linseed Oil that is 100% solids, solvent free, and contains no heavy metal driers. The finish is a satin to semi-gloss appearance depending on the number of coats applied to the piece. I utilize the natural finish but it is available with tints like “red mahogany.” As the finish ages it becomes harder and more durable. Maintenance of the finish requires only occasional buffing with a soft cloth.
- Tung Oil
This oil is considered a drying oil and depending on the solids content can provide a satin to gloss finish. This finish provides a tough, highly water-resistant finish which does not darken noticeably with age. Tung oil is often used to finish kitchen utensils, butcher block, etc. and is safe for food contact.
- Other finishes
I have used polyurethane, Liberon finishing oil, Deft finishes, Watco finishes, etc.
